50 CE main port 'Adulis' for elephant ivory, Aksum 8-day caravan). 40 ha city: Ayla? Almaqah), basilican church (4th c Ge'ez Christianity), palaces, Ayla? Finds: Roman amphorae (Axum 2017 Adulis amphorae), Aksumite coins, Egyptian glass. Monumentum Adulitanum – 3rd c trilingual royal inscription copied by Cosmas Indicopleustes. Submerged anchorage due to tectonic subsidence 2 m. Gulf of Zula mangroves. Threat sea-level + looting. Nearby Galala hills obsidian source.
Port abandoned 8th c after Islamic control of straits and subsidence.
