About Aflaj Irrigation Systems of Oman
Approximately 3,000 still-active aflaj (singular falaj) thread Oman, of which five exemplars — Daris, Al-Khatmeen, Al-Malki, Al-Jeela and Al-Muyassar — are inscribed. Underground mother-well galleries up to 10 km long, ventilated by vertical shafts every 20 m, deliver aquifer water by gravity to open shari'ah distribution channels where water time-shares (athar) are auctioned. The system sustains 10,000 ha of palm gardens without pumps.
