Hellenistic polis (c.300–145 BCE) at Oxus confluence, founded by Seleucus I as Alexandria on Oxus, excavated 1964–1979 by French DAFA. Greek grid with gymnasium, theatre 5000-seat, palace, Corinthian temple with syncretic Zeus-Mithra, papyrus fragments of Delphic maxims and Aristotelian text reveal Bactrian Greek kingdom far east.
