Akjoujt (Agueijit) — Mauritania's Chalcolithic copper-mining centre just south of Akjoujt town, Inchiri, active 1970–500 BCE (earliest copper smelting in West Africa). Open pits and shaft mines on Bled M'Den green malachite gossan, smelting furnaces with tuyères and slag heaps 2 m thick yielding 1,000-ton slag field, plus village with grinding stones and lost-wax copper axe hoards (Mauritanian copper variant). Contemporary with Akreijit Dhar structure? Shows Atlantic copper extraction preceding Carthaginian contact.
Why it mattersProof West African copper metallurgy 1,000 years before iron, independent of Near East; type-site for Mauritanian copper axe.
