About Akra – The Fully Submerged Bosporan City at Cape Takyl

Entire classical Bosporan town (late 6th c. BCE – 4th c. CE) preserved 3–7 m beneath Kerch Strait at Cape Takyl, called Crimean Atlantis – only fully submerged town on Black Sea. Harbour walls, two defensive walls, towers, streets, houses with courtyards, stone-lined wells and anchors in situ. Founded c.560 BCE as anchorage protecting Strait. Submerged by combined Black Sea +3 m rise and Taman trough subsidence by 4th c. CE. Aerial+drone 2011‑, underwater 2012– (Solovyov, Vakhtina) map 3.5 ha street grid, defensive circuit 3 m thick, gate, coins of Cotys I, amphorae stacks. Never rebuilt inland = time capsule.

Why it mattersOnly wholly submerged Classical town on Black Sea; intact street grid provides Bosporan urbanism metric and absolute sea-level marker +3 m.
