About Citadel of Aleppo
One of the oldest continuously fortified mounds in the world, Aleppo citadel occupies a 45 m-high tell (Yamhad kingdom capital c.1800 BCE). Present Ayyubid fortress by al-Zahir Ghazi (1213) with massive glacis, bridge-pit entrance, Great Mosque, and excavated Temple of the Storm God (c.1300–900 BCE) with basalt orthostat reliefs of Tarhunza. Part of Ancient City of Aleppo WHS; damaged in Syrian civil war.
