About
About Althiburos
Hilltop Numidian then Roman city at 720 m in Dorsale foothills, Althiburos (Medeina) spans 12 ha with extra-mural megalithic necropolis 1.5 km long. Numidian stone rampart, Punic sanctuary, Roman forum (1st c CE), Capitolium (2nd c), twin-bay arch of Hadrian, odeon, 4th-c three-aisled church reusing capitals, and extensive residential insulae. Surrounding plain filled with 500+ megalithic dolmens (haouanet) and bazinas, demonstrating Libyco-Berber continuity 400 BCE–400 CE. Joint Tunisian-Spanish excavations since 1995 reveal Phoenician imports 8th c BCE and local Numidian ceramic sequence — key for interior pre-Roman chronology.
Why it mattersBest-dated interior Numidian sequence and megalithic necropolis bridging Bronze Age to Roman — reference for pre-Roman Tunisia.
