Apuolė (Apulia) — Curonian hillfort (5th–13th c, florescence 850s, attacked 853 by Vikings per Rimbert's Vita Ansgarii) on Luoba tributary, Skuodas District, oldest Lithuanian settlement mentioned in documents (Rimbert 854 describes 15,000 defenders vs Danish and Swedish 8,500 Vikings). Quadrangular 100×80 m plateau, 8 m rampart, outer bailey 6 ha, timber-reinforced earthwork, Curonian–Baltic crafts, amber, Scandinavian dirham hoard. Excavated 1931 Volter, 1960s Kulikauskas. Legend of Curonian victory over Vikings before Christianization; reconstructed wooden fort and archaeological park.
