About Avaldsnes Royal Manor & Storhaug Ship Mound

Oldest Norwegian royal seat at the narrow Karmsund strait, where saga sources place Harald Fairhair's main manor. Archaeology shows continuous elite residence from Roman Iron Age through Medieval, with Storhaug (c.780) and Grønhaug ship mounds, St. Olav's church (c.1250) and recent excavations exposing a 45 m Viking hall and silver hoards. Nordvegen History Centre interprets the sea-kings' toll control over Norway's compulsory strait sail route.
