About

About Avaris – Hyksos Harbour Capital at Tell el-Dab'a

Avaris (Egyptian Hut-waret) was the Hyksos capital (Dyn 15, c. 1650–1550 BCE) dominating a Pelusiac Nile branch harbour that could moor 300 ships (Kamose stela). Excavations by Manfred Bietak (1966–) revealed a 2 km-walled city with Minoan fresco harbour palace (bull-leaping, labyrinth), Canaanite temples and the silted Pelusiac harbour basin (500x300 m) cored with ship timbers and Minoan sherds under 4 m silt. The harbour silted as the Pelusiac Branch migrated east in New Kingdom; Pi-Ramesses (Dyn 19) reused the site and later Tanis moved blocks north.

The Minoan fresco proves Aegean diplomatic harbour link. Abandoned after Kamose/Ahmose expelled Hyksos 1550 BCE; Ramesses II reoccupied as Piramesse harbour.

Why it mattersOnly Hyksos capital with Aegean fresco harbour palace; proves Pelusiac branch harbour could harbour 300-ship fleet and Minoan diplomatic link.
