About
About Banaue Hydraulic Terraces North Cluster (Cambulo–Batad North Extension)
North-slope terrace hydraulic cluster (1,240 m) on the steep north bowl above Batad amphitheatre and Cambulo valley, Ifugao Province, Cordillera, Luzon, Philippines—northernmost lobe of Banaue UNESCO terraces (722). 4 km mountain-source contour canal (immugan gravity channel 40 cm wide) tapping Chico tributary spring 820 m above, with stone-lined aqueduct over 3 ravines and wooden sluice (chalchal) rotation. 8 m with clay-core + laterite packing identical to Batad bowl but north-facing microclimate supports Tinawon heirloom rice distinct cultivar.
Hydrochrono waster dating: canal charcoal 1640±40 CE (post-Spanish upland migration per Acabado); terrace soil 1150 CE suggests earlier swidden terrace prototype. Threatened by Ifugao youth out-migration (wall collapse) + giant earthworm invasive.
Why it mattersNorth-lobe provenance solves 1640 vs 3000 yr terrace antiquity debate (Acabado migration); north-face Tinawon ecology.
