About
About Banavasi
Banavasi is the 1st–14th century capital of the Kadamba kingdom (c.345–540 CE) and the oldest city of Karnataka, a 100-ha fortified bend in the Varada River with brick rampart (4 km), laterite moat, and the Madhukeshwara Temple (Karnata Dravida). Excavated by S. A. Sali (1969–80) and Morari (1991), it shows Satavahana brick town → Kadamba palace–tank complex → Chalukya nagara layers, with Roman amphora (50 CE), Kadamba coins (lion), and Talagunda inscription linking to Banavasi. At 550 m on Malenadu–coastal corridor, the 4-ha tank bund and Ashokan minor rock edit-era trade route make it the Deccan–Konkan gateway.
Why it mattersOldest continuous city of Karnataka; Kadamba capital linking Satavahana Deccan to Konkan trade.
