About
About Belevi Mausoleum — Ephesus Royal Tomb
Second largest mausoleum in Anatolia (after Halicarnassus, 29 m square, 28 Corinthian columns) on an isolated hillside 14 km NE of Ephesus beside the Izmir-Aydın highway in the Kaystros valley. Begun c.301 BCE for Lysimachus (one of Alexander's Diadochi) and completed c.260 BCE as tomb for Seleucid Antiochus II Theos (d.246 BCE in Ephesus), the hilltop podium with barrel-vaulted chamber and coffered griffins mirrors Mausolus' tomb (Praschniker & Theuer 1979). Excavated 1931–35 Keil, agora sarcophagus and griffins now Ephesus Museum. The monument controls the Ephesus-Sardis royal road and Artemision estate, demonstrating Diadochi legitimation via Mausolus emulation.
Why it mattersDiadochi royal tomb bridging Halicarnassus Mausoleum and Pergamon altar, key for Hellenistic ruler cult architecture.
