Birka (Björkö) — Scandinavian Viking Age emporium (c.750–975 CE) on Björkö island in Lake Mälaren, 30 km west Stockholm, Sweden's oldest town and UNESCO 555 (with Hovgården Adelsö estate). Excavated H. Stolpe 1871–95 uncovered 1,100 graves, 3,000+ barrows, Borg hillfort 7 ha, Black Earth (Svarta jorden) occupation 12 ha dense with dirham, Frankish glass, Rhine pottery, amber, and the controversial Birka girl warrior Bj.581 (10th c). Adam of Bremen's Birca, Ansgar's 831 mission first church Sweden, 831–845. Mälaren–Baltic watergate to Hedeby and Eastern dirham route to Baghdad. Abandoned 975→ Sigtuna.
