About Birnin Gazargamu
Birnin Gazargamu (1460–1808) was Kanem–Bornu Empire capital, 6.5 km earthen walls 5 m high enclosing palace mound, great mosque 100×50 m and 200 compound mounds on Yo/ Kamadugu Yobe. 15th-c. Mai Ali Gaji founded after Bornu shift from Kanem. Fur–cola–slave caravan hub. Sacked by Fulani Usman dan Fodio jihad 1808. Connah 1964–70 excavations revealed imported brass, Kanem pottery and Sudanese glass beads linking to Fezzan.
Why it mattersOnly excavated Kanem–Bornu capital; documents Sahel empire shift from Kanem.
