About
About Butuan – Balangay Harbour Settlement, Agusan del Norte
Butuan on the Agusan River near its mouth preserves a 10th–13th c. Balangay boatyard with 9 plank-built edge-joined Balangay boats (8–15 m) excavated waterlogged in riverbank silt 2 m below floodplain, plus a timber wharf 60 m along former channel now 1 km inland. National Museum–Clark excavations (1976–2016) mapped stilt-house posts and Chinese Yue sherds at 1.5 m, and boatyard with boat No. 2 at –1 m under 2 m silt. The Agusan's 1311 flood silted harbour channel, shifting port to Nasipit. The Balangay boats anchor Austronesian edge-joining and pre-colonial Butuan–Champa trade.
Why it mattersOnly Austronesian Balangay boatyard with 9 intact boats; hulls anchor pre-colonial Philippine shipbuilding and Butuan chronology.
