About
About Callanish Satellite Complex
Six stone circles and ellipses arrayed within 1.5 km of the Calanais I cross-shaped megalith – primary in the database – extend the main alignment: Callanish II (stone ellipse of 7 slabs), Callanish III (ovate ring of 13 slabs with interior cairn), Cnoc Ceann a'Gharaidh double rows and Cnoc Fillibhir stone circle. Together they form the densest late Neolithic lunar observatory system, tracking the 18.6-year major lunar standstill over the Harris hills from the Callanish I avenue.
Why it mattersSix stone circles and ellipses arrayed within 1.5 km of the Calanais I cross-shaped megalith – primary in the database – extend the main alignment: Callanish II (stone ellipse of 7 slabs), Callanish I

Mysteries & theories
Mysteries
- 01Why satellites were added after Callanish I completion rather than enlarging the main ring
- 02Dichotomy between tall Callanish I slabs and squat satellite stones – quarry or symbolic contrast
Theories
- 01Progressive Beaker elaboration of a Grooved Ware lunar calendar
- 02Kin-group satellites replicating main circle as lineage burial annexes
Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
