About
About Cantona Acropolis Pyramid (Terrace City)
Extraordinary terraced pyramid-city of Cantona (Olmeca-Xicalanca? 600–1000 CE) on 12 km² malpaís lava flow at 2550 m: 24 ballcourts (most any Mesoamerican city), Acropolis pyramid 12 m with pyramidal terraces, 500+ cobbled causeways, 3000 patios, stone-walled street network without mortar — largest pre-Hispanic network in Mexico. Built on barren lava requiring imported soil. Intensive obsidian workshops, pulque economy. Abandoned 1000 CE after fall. Excavated by Angel García Cook INAH 1992–.
Why it mattersMost ballcourts globally; lava urbanism unique; causeway network dwarfs others — hypothetical Olmec-Xicalanca identity and collapse just before Tollan rise.
