About Ceyhan Karadağ Roman Dam (Karadağ–Ceyhan Saddle Dam, Cilician Plain)
Saddle dam (120 m) on Karadağ basalt cone–Ceyhan plain low saddle 14 km east of Ceyhan town, Cilician alluvial plain edge. Low earth embankment 280 m long, 8.8 m high, 22 m base width with basalt riprap upstream and limestone spillway 42 m with stilling basin 12 m. Traps 65,000 m³ seasonal hillslope runoff from Karadağ cone 420 m high feeding Roman estate 28 ha via gravity canal 2.2 km with 4 arched aqueduct sections 2.8 m high. Dated Roman Severan 198 CE with milestone at canal foot (CIL 12242). Companion to Anazarbus aqueduct 18 km north. Reservoir silted but spillway intact; canal arches retained. Threatened by Ceyhan–Adana road embankment cut through canal arch 2.
Why it mattersOnly extant Severan saddle dam on Cilician plain linking Ceyhan Karadağ hillslope capture to arched aqueduct — estate hydraulic model.
