About
About Crosskirk Broch
Severely eroded coastal broch and fort on a cliff edge near Crosskirk, Caithness, commanding Pentland Firth. Excavated 1966–72 by H. Fairhurst before coastal loss; sequence shows early fort (c.600–400 BCE) enclosed by stone rampart, then broch tower (c.200 BCE) with outer defences, later wheelhouse and Norse reoccupation. Finds include Roman samian ware suggesting long-distance exchange. Roughly half the broch has fallen into the sea; memorial cairn marks site above Forss. Now represented by scarp and foundations conserved as scheduled monument after excavation backfilled.
