Greek Theran foundation 631 BCE and orthodox Doric-then-Roman metropolis of 100 ha on cypress terraces 10 km inland from Apollonia. Highlights: Sanctuary of Apollo 64×44 m temple (Apollo Myrtoan), Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone extra-mural, Sanctuary of Zeus (largest Doric temple in Libya, 70×30 m), Agora with Strategeion and Naval monument, Caesareum and Forum, Gymnasium, houses with medusa mosaics, amphitheatre carved into quarry, and tombs of 1000+ sarcophagus tumuli. Philosophy schools of Aristippus and Carneades. 365 CE earthquake toppled; Byzantine repairs visible.
