About

About Debeira West — New Kingdom Pyramid Cemetery (Lower Nubia)

Largely unsalvaged New Kingdom to early Kushite pyramid cemetery 22 km north of Semna system, with 15+ steep mudbrick pyramids (base 8–12 m, height inferred 10–15 m) over shaft tombs of Egyptianized Nubian elite and Egyptian officials (c.1500–1000 BCE). Each pyramid had chapel, shaft 4–8 m deep and vaulted chamber; wall paintings fragmentary with Egyptian Book of Dead vignettes executed in Nubian style. Later re-used for Napatan child burials. Excavated 1961–64 by Scandinavian Joint Expedition before Lake Nubia fringe; many mounds still eroding.

Why it mattersMost southerly Egyptian-style pyramid field before Kushite Meroë revival; bridges Egyptian New Kingdom and Kushite pyramid traditions.
