About
About Derryoghill Trackway – Edercloon Wooden Platform (Longford)
An Early Medieval wooden platform and adjoining 850-m alder causeway (680–800 CE dendro) in Derryoghill bog, northernmost element of the Edercloon bog road palimpsest distinct from Clonbrin Causey 7 km south. The platform is a 12 x 8 m brushwood and plank island in raised bog linked by the causeway to mineral soil, associated with iron smelting slag and crucible fragments indicating bog-edge industrial transport. Excavated 2007–2009 during the same N4 bypass as Clonbrin, the alder–hazel trackway shows early medieval continuity of Irish bog road architecture after the Iron Age hiatus. Preservation includes leather shoes and wooden bowl in platform silts.
Why it mattersRare early medieval bog road showing post-Roman continuity of Irish togher technology.
