First cataract nilometer island 1.8 km long, Elephantine (Abu - 'elephant' - ivory market) preserves Khnum temple niche (Middle Kingdom tripartite cult Khnum-Satis-Anuket), Old Kingdom island town 3rd dynasty mudbrick walls 300×150 m, New Kingdom quay, casemate and Jewish-Aramaic papyri archive (Yeb house of Yahu c.495 BCE) documenting Jewish mercenary garrison of Persian 25th dynasty with Yahweh-Asherah temple parallel to Jerusalem. Later Greek quarter, Kalabsha gate of Amenhotep III reerected, and nilometer stair 90 steps 1870 re-cut. Elephantine papyri include Passover letter 419 BCE. Stratified 5 m tells artificial-island Nilometer.
