About
About Old Town of Ghadames
Old Town of Ghadames — pearl of the Sahara — 7.2-ha walled ksar of whitewashed cubic houses roofed over shaded alleyways 10 m below, fed by artesian Ain Al Faras spring at 15 l/s, the only permanent oasis on Tripolitanian Sahara 600 km from coast. Roman Cydamus (captured by Cornelius Balbus 19 BCE) lies beneath medieval Ibadi Berber town rebuilt after 680 CE Arab conquest, with 5 mosques, 7 quarters (At Utman, At Afrough etc.) and palm gardens (ghabas) outside walls. Household qanat channels distribute spring water by timed sharba. Inscribed UNESCO 1986, endangered since civil war.
Why it mattersType-ksar for Saharan vernacular adaptation with engineered family water-clock distribution still operable.
