About Grianan of Aileach
Imposing hilltop stone ringfort crowning Greenan Mountain (244 m) on Inishowen, Co. Donegal, with panoramic views over Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle. Immense circular cashel 23.5 m internal diameter with walls 4.5 m thick, 5 m high, with terraced internal steps, intramural passages and two gateways. Traditionally seat of the O'Neill kings of Ailech (5th–12th century CE) but built over Iron Age hillfort and early monastic? phase. Restored 1870 by Dr Walter Bernard. Interpreted as elite hillfort/royal inauguration site and later monastic enclosure, with Iron Age and Early Medieval construction phases.
