About Hama Norias — Orontes River Water Wheels (Hama Historic Hydraulic System)
Seventeen surviving norias (river-driven water wheels) on Orontes River through Hama (285 m), largest Al-Muhammadiya 21 m diameter (largest noria in world, 1207 Ayyubid), lifting Orontes water 15–21 m via wooden compartment cogs to stone aqueducts on piers (Roman base). System: norias → stone aqueducts (on Byzantine piers) → hilltop cisterns and urban fountains + 12 km downstream canal to Ghab fields. Bearings originally basalt, later iron. Medieval chronicler Ibn Jubayr 1184 describes ‘wheels that moan’.
Damaged in 1982 events + 2023 earthquake (Al-Mamuniya wheel cracked). UNESCO tentative 1999. System shows multi-period palimpsest: Seleucid aqueduct, Roman noria intro, Byzantine, Ayyubid flourishing, Ottoman repair.
