About Harlaa — Lost Islamic City
Harlaa (Ganda Biyo) is a medieval Islamic city-state (6th–15th c CE) on the southern Afar escarpment 15 km SE of Dire Dawa, excavated 2017– by Exeter & Ethiopian Authority. 500×350 m walled town at 1700 m with coursed limestone mosque (12th c, mihrab oriented 18° off qibla), 5 cemeteries, carnelian-bead workshops, Chinese celadon and Yemeni glass, and a 13th-century jewelry hoard. Strontium isotopes show mixed local Cushitic and Arabian/Indian Ocean migrants — first direct evidence for cosmopolitan Islam in Ethiopia pre-Aksum decline.
Why it mattersOnly excavated pre-15th c Islamic urban site in eastern Ethiopia bridging Aksum collapse and Adal Sultanate; bead isotopic data rewrites Indian Ocean trade.
