First capital of centralized Đại Cồ Việt after independence (968–1010 CE) — fortress between limestone karst towers (Tam Coc–Trang An) and river at Hoa Lu, Dinh (968) and Early Le (980) citadels — outer earthen rampart 10 km between karsts originally; 300 m palace foundation of Dinh Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh with imperial well. Chose defensible karst gorge after Ngô Quyền's Bach Dang victory; capital moved 1010 by Lý Thái Tồ to Thăng Long (Hanoi).
