About Huaca del Sol Grand Pyramid — Moche
Huaca del Sol at Moche (Huacas de Moche archaeological complex) 5 km south Trujillo: enormous adobe pyramid 340×136 m base, 41 m high, built with 140 million adobes each marked by labor gang (ayllu) makers' marks. Excavated by Uhle 1898, Hastings-Moseley 1960s–: platform with palace summit, administrative courts, and reservoir. Severely looted/harnassed by Spanish diverting Moche River (1600s) destroying 2/3. Still colossal. Partner Huaca de la Luna is ritual center with polychrome friezes 3 km apart connected by urban sprawl (Moche city 10k). Moche state core.
