About
About Jaffa (Tel Yafo) – Ancient Harbour of the Andromeda Reef
Jaffa (Joppa/Yafo) – biblical port of cedar for Solomon's Temple and myth of Andromeda chained to its reef rocks. Its natural reef harbour (Andromeda Rocks/Andromeda Reef) encloses a shallow basin 2–5 m deep used from Middle Bronze (Hyksos ramparts) to Ottoman, whose submerged quay walls, mooring piers and Ottoman jetty lie 1–5 m down along the reef gap. Burke's Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project and IAA underwater survey (2011) mapped a Byzantine seawall at –1.5 m, Crusader chain boom sockets in reef, and 18th c. Ottoman jetty blocks toppled by 1837 Galilee earthquake. The harbour's reef-gap entrance (20 m) is still the modern fishing harbour mouth.
Why it mattersOnly Levantine reef-gap harbour preserving myth–topology anchor (Andromeda myth fossilizes reef navigation hazard); stratifies 3500-year harbour use without artificial mole.
