About

About Jawa South Dam & Reservoir System (Wadi Rajil South Extension)

Early Bronze Age (EB I, 3300 BCE) southern wing of the Jawa dam–reservoir complex on Wadi Rajil, Black Desert, 12 km east of Safawi, Mafraq Governorate. 5 km diversion canal to north reservoir. Dated by Helms (1981) to EB I (3300 BCE) via ceramics + C14 — world's oldest dam system contention with Jawa north vs Sadd el-Kafara. Built by Jawa's 2,000-pop proto-urban community to capture spring Rajil flood over basalt impermeable catchment, with settling tank silt trap.

System failed c. 2 ka arid event causing Jawa abandonment. Contentious world's-oldest-dam claim with Sadd el-Kafara Egypt.

Why it mattersSouthern wing proves Jawa is dual-dam system (not single); world's-oldest dual-dam redundancy.
