About

About Jemdet Nasr

Two-mound type-site of the Jemdet Nasr period (c.3100–2900 BCE) — the 200-year proto-literate bottleneck between Uruk and Dynastic Sumer — where Langdon found archaic cylinder seals and tablets with numerical signs and pictographs that are the immediate precursors to classic cuneiform, plus the famous polychrome pottery (black-red-yellow geometric ware) whose kilns still line the lower town.

Why it mattersDefines transitional horizon on which writing, seals and wheeled transport were consolidated.
