About
About Kadesh (Tell Nebi Mend) – Orontes Harbour City of the Hittite Battle
Kadesh (Qadesh) – Amorite–Mitanni–Hittite frontier city on Orontes where Ramses II and Muwatalli II fought the earliest pitched battle with surviving account (1274 BCE Kadesh inscriptions). Its riverside harbour quay (30 m mudbrick revetment) on Orontes palaeochannel handled Lebanese cedar and Beqaa grain, now silted 200 m east of tell with harbour mud and Egyptian–Hittite sherds at –1 m. Parr's excavations (1975–1990s) uncovered harbour revetment, Hittite–Egyptian boundary stelae and Late Bronze harbour mud. The Orontes ford below Kadesh is still the Beqaa–Homs chokepoint.
Why it mattersOnly Orontes harbour preserving Kadesh battle harbour stratigraphy and Egyptian–Hittite bilingual battle inscription context.
