Kafir-Kala — Sogdian dihqan (landlord) fortress-palace (5th–8th c CE) 12 km SE Samarkand, Dargham canal, excavated 1970s–2000s Berdimuradov (Samarkand Institute). Kafir-Kala occupies 4 ha walled town with 1.2 m mudbrick rampart, 3 m wide, central palace 30×30 m with four-iwan, columned hall, wall paintings (Sogdian banquet scene), fire altar, and Zoroastrian ossuary. Pre-Islamic Sogdian–Hephthalite then Turkic, destroyed by Arab Qutayba 712 and reoccupied 9th c Samanid. Documents Sogdian dihqan system before Islamic Samarkand.
