Kaole is a 13th–16th c Swahili settlement 3 km S of Bagamoyo, Tanzania's earliest Swahili site (Shiraz origin legend 13th c). 30 coral tombs (pillar tombs with Chinese bowls) and 2 coral mosques (oldest 13th c Shirazi mosque 9×10 m with 3 m coral pillars, latest 15th c with 30 mihrabs), plus well and Kitonga? Ruins lie 5 km from Bagamoyo slave-trade town, protected as Kaole National Museum. Diwan of Kaole 12th c legend. Features Swahili coral architecture before Kilwa.
