Karanis (Kom Aushim) on the NE Fayum edge — Ptolemy II's 257 BCE Arsinoite grain colony expanded under Rome into the Fayum's largest town (85 ha, 3,800 houses) of mudbrick vaulted dwellings on Roman grid, famed for 1924–35 Michigan excavations revealing Sag-houses with intact papyri (1,200+ documents), South Temple of Soknobkonneus with 5-m high pigeon towers, North Temple, granaries and oil press. Agricultural town of veterans and Gallic-Pontic mercenaries whose papyri preserve census, loans, and Narmouthicnome water contracts. Abandoned 5th c with Lake Qarun retreat.
