About

About Karinhegane Rock Art (Castellated Shelter)

Deep gorge 10 shelter system with Somaliland's most accomplished naturalistic pastoral art: 1000 BCE–present? Panels include life-size camel (?) but more typically elongated humans, bovines with udders, dogs, and giraffe, executed in monochrome red and polychrome. Site includes stratified deposits with lithics and pottery. Explorers 'Mire's 'Culturally embedded' interpretation. Nearby Karin village with oral heritage D. Also includes inscriptions (Sabaean-like?). Threat from quarrying and al-Shabaab proximity limited tourism. Colour preserved under drip line. Similar to Dhambalin but more dynamic human figures. Discovered British Somaliland survey 1930s by Seton-Karr, revisited 2007.

Why it mattersDemonstrates continuity of pastoral ideology post-Dhambalin to camel era; stylistically links to Arabian Peninsula rock art (Wadi Saba?).
