About

About Kayalıpınar (ancient Šamuḫa)

Major Hittite administrative city confidently identified as Šamuḫa, key cult and military capital that housed the Storm God of Šamuḫa and Ishtar of Šamuḫa, where Hattusili III took refuge and Mursili II campaigned. Excavated since 2005 (V. Müller-Karpe, Marburg), the 2 ha upper mound overlays a 20 ha lower town with palatial Building A (sealings of Great Kings and Queens), late Empire archive of 100+ cuneiform tablets including ritual to Mursili and oracle letters, and monumental gate. Peak Hittite Empire (c.1500–1180 BCE) on the upper Kızılırmak bend.

Why it mattersOnly Hittite city securely tied to a major textually known Šamuḫa; resolves decades-long geography debate; archive illumines late Empire administration.
