About
About Kepoi — Southern Ashlar Quay in Taman Gulf
Southern ashlar quay of Kepoi, Milesian 'Gardens' colony noted by Strabo, now 2–4 m under Taman Gulf where post-Phanagorian sea-level rise drowned the eastern city. The 40-m ashlar quay with drafted margins and lewis holes survives in three courses (0.9 m high) with a bollard and lead-sheathed timber fender. Behind the quay, a silted warehouse (oikos) 14 × 9 m with amphora inventory (Sinope, Peparethos) lies under 0.6 m sand. The harbour silted from the 2nd c. CE as Taman Gulf became lagoon, sealing Classical floors under sterile sand. Kepoi's Aphrodite sanctuary 80 m north (marble 'Aphrodite of Taman' find 1958) links the quay to cult shipping.
Why it mattersBest-preserved Taman small-polis harbour; Aphrodite-of-Taman context anchors Bosporan marble trade.
