Episcopal stone castle at Koknese island fortress at confluence of Daugava and Pērse (Latgalian hillfort predecessor Kukonoyse), founded 1205 by Bishop Albert after grant by King Vetseke of Koknese, 4× stronger than Magdeburg law town 1270. Blow up in Great Northern War 1701 by Saxons. Now island ruin in Pļaviņas Reservoir 1960s. Archaeological park with dolomite walls.
