Earliest complex society mound-platform in upper Amazon-Andean foothills — Santa Ana-La Florida on Mayo-Chinchipe (5300–2500 BCE, Valdivia contemporaneous) with 80 × 80 m stone ceremonial platform with spiral pyramid-mound 30 m diameter and sunken circular plaza with central hearth, associated with stirrup-spout ceramics, turquoise from 2000 km and cacao residues (earliest 3300 BCE) and Mayo-Chinchipe iconography spiral. Limón-Indanza nearby similar platforms document Andean-Amazon interaction. Excavated by Francisco Valdez IRD 2002– (PNAC Palanda). Rewrites Amazon-Andean early complexity and cacao origin.
Why it mattersEarliest ceremonial platform in upper Amazon; reframes cacao domestication to 3300 BCE; Andean-Amazon connectivity 3000 BCE.
