About Marea — Central Harbour at Lake Mareotis (Phi Loxene)
5–5 m Lake Mareotis silt at Hawariya central bay. The harbour is a 60-m limestone mole with bollard 32 m offshore, a paved quay 45 m with wine press mosaic (Dionysus), and a warehouse 18 × 12 m with Marean amphora kiln wasters and resin stoppers. 2-m-high lake ridge that was breached in 2021 augering, proving the harbour was lagoonal. The wine port peaked 3rd c. BCE–7th c. 8 km from water. Polish Centre (Majcherek) and Franciscan excavations 2000+ uncovered the press.
