About
About Meninx (Djerba) – Phoenician-Roman Port
Two-kilometre strand city on Djerba's southeastern causeway shore, Meninx was the island's Phoenician emporion turned Roman civitas capital, famed for murex purple second only to Tyre. German–Tunisian excavations (Fentress 1997–2015) exposed forum, basilica, baths, amphitheatre (80 m) and purple vats with 30 kg murex middens. Street grid overlies Punic warehouse moles now 50 m offshore. Civic inscriptions list sufetes and duoviri; 400+ amphora stamps trace olive oil to Rome. Sacred tophet fragment and large Christian basilica mark continuity. UNESCO Tentative for Djerba island territory.
