About
About Minufiyya Basin Canal & Dyke System (Nile Delta Apex Margins)
Pharaonic–Islamic basin irrigation dyke–canal complex (18 m asl) at the Nile Delta apex, Minufiyya (Menoufia) Governorate, 58 km NW of Cairo, Egypt. 2 km² each (total 18 km²), fed via transverse feeder sluice at Kafr Basati. Basins filled sequentially August–October Nile inundation; dyke breach sequence recorded on Palermo Stone year 17 of Sneferu noting 'founding of Shy basin'? Fayum-style margin feeder adapted to apex bifurcation. Survives as palimpsest under modern Menoufia fields; aerial 1960s shows ghost dykes.
Compare to Fayum Bahr Yussef but apex rather than depression. Threatened by delta urbanization + sea salt intrusion.
Why it mattersApex basin vs Fayum depression basin contrast; only apex-margin basin preserved under modern Delta fields.
