Mons Claudianus is the Trajanic Roman quarry complex (98–117 CE peak) in Red Sea Mountains 500 km S of Cairo at 700 m, extracting Tonalite gneiss (Claudianus granodiorite grey with black feldspar tuning-fork columns) for Pantheon and Trajan's Forum 12 m shafts. Fort 70×70 m with hydreuma cistern, baths, stables, Serapis temple; 130-workman village with ostraca (900 found) detailing wages and barley. Largest column ever 19.8 m abandoned in quarry. Ostraca show 25% slave labour.
