About
About Musti (Mustis)
Musti (Mustis) is a 15-ha Punic–Numidian then Roman colonia straddling the Carthage–Theveste road 8 km west of El Krib. Punic mausoleum and neo-Punic inscriptions mark Numidian origin; under Marcus Aurelius it became colonia Iulia Aurelia Mustitana. Extant remains include three triumphal arches (one Punic-Roman double arch exceptionally preserved), Capitol, forum porticoed with Corinthian capitals, large Byzantine fortress reusing temple blocks, and subterranean cisterns. Epigraphy of >500 Latin inscriptions documents municipal rivalry with Sicca Veneria. Agricultural hinterland olive and grain wealth mirrors Dougga but with rarer Punic arch typology.
Why it mattersRare Punic-Roman double arch and continuous Punic inscription record bridging Carthaginian and Roman municipal law.
