About
About Myos Hormos — Central Lagoon Harbour at Marsa Nakari
5 m in Marsa Nakari mangrove lagoon behind the fossil reef. The harbour basin is 70 m × 50 m, defined by a rubble mole 40 m long and a paved coral-block quay 28 m with Roman concrete (pozzolana) facing, dated by Dressel 2–4 amphorae to Augustan (30 BCE–14 CE) fleet refoundation after Actium. 1 m since Roman optimum due to wadi flash-flood alluvium, sealing harbour muds with Indo-Roman peppercorns, Nicanor ostraka tags and teak fragments from Indian dhows (Ptolemy–Strabo India route).
The mole's southern tip carries a Serapis shrine plinth (2 × 2 m) aligned to midwinter sunrise, parallel to Berenike's Serapis temple. Sidebotham's Eastern Desert survey linked the harbour via the Porphyrites–Coptos road and Mons Porphyrites quarries.
Why it mattersOnly Augustan Indo-Roman lagoon harbour with preserved concrete and Indian dhow teak; Periplus toponym anchor; Eastern Desert road terminus.
