About Naqa — Temple of Apedemak and Meroitic Platform Complex

Meroitic royal city and temple town 50 km east of Nile, famed for co-built Temple of Apedemak (Natakamani & Amanitore, 1st century CE) with twin pylons covered in lion-god reliefs, Roman kiosk and relief of queen smiting enemies. Eight pyramid-like kiosk platforms and Barque shrine on elevated sandstone terraces mimic pyramidal mass. Near Apedemak stands Temple of Amun with ram alley, plus circular shrine and large hafir. Co-rulers' names in Meroitic hieroglyphs; excavations by German Archaeological Institute.

Why it mattersMasterpiece of Meroitic art; inscribed UNESCO Archaeological Sites of Island of Meroë (2011); shows Kushite-Egyptian-Roman syncretism.
