About Patrai — Central Submerged Emporium in Kerch Strait
Central strait emporium of Patrai, 6th c. BCE–5th c. CE transshipment port at the Kerch Strait narrows (ancient Cimmerian Bosporus) where Athenian grain convoys transferred to Bosporan cabotage. The site comprises a 50-m-long rubble mole perpendicular to the Taman shore at 2–4 m depth, a paved transshipment quay (32 m) and a customs house (telonia) 12 × 8 m with stamped roof tiles 'Patreon'. The mole handled strait current (2 knots) via a 25° angle.
2 m since antiquity submerged the mole crest, which appears on 19th c. charts as 'Patray Bank'. Finds include Athenian standard measures (choinix), grain shippers' tags (ostraka) and Bosporan silver hoards, documenting Patrai's role as grain toll station for the Spartocid kingdom.
Why it mattersOnly Bosporan toll station preserved underwater; grain convoy logistics for Classical Athens; strait current engineering.
